Living in a simulated world

It was in the 1980s that Pacman became a  hit game around the world, and now thirty-eight years later games look much different. From the old pixelated, two-dimensional characters full photorealistic world that a complex network of NPC characters inhabits. To say that its a great technological advance is an understatement, and once questing begs for an answer. How far can video games go?

Photorealisic game
Yes, that is from a video game.

Let’s start with asking one questing, will we continue advancing this technology? The answer to that is probably yes, it seems reasonable. The other questing is then, will it be possible to create a complete simulation of the world we live in? This is a harder questing to answer, but there are no physical laws that prohibit it. So it should be possible but far of in the future. If you, like me, buy those two statements, that technology will always advance, no matter how slowly, and that a simulation of the world could one day exist there’s one interesting conclusion we can make from that.

If we believe that a complete simulation of the world could be created far of in the future, how do we know that it hasn’t already been done, and we live in the simulation now?  You may now think “well that’s crazy, this is real” and you might be right. But if you believe that a simulation of the world one day will be possible, how can you with certainty say that you are not the simulation? There would probably be more simulations than reality, so the odds are against us.  We might live in base reality, or we might not, it does change much in our day to day life, but it is possible. (At least if you believe in the two questions).

One interesting thing about this idea is how some really smart and successful people have spent a lot of time exploring this idea, like Sam Harris and Elon Musk. So is it possible your a simulation you might ask yourself, and well, it is very well possible?
