Happiness in a digital world

Soma is a powerful drug in Aldous Huxley’s “Brave New World” that is used to induce feelings of happiness and contentment in the citizens of the society. The use of soma is widespread and encouraged by the government as a means of controlling the population and ensuring their obedience. It is often used to calm citizens who may be experiencing negative emotions or to distract them from unpleasant realities. Soma is seen as an essential tool in maintaining the stability of the society, but it also serves to perpetuate a false sense of happiness and contentment that keeps people from questioning the world around them. While the drug may seem like a fictional concept, it is not hard to draw parallels between the effects of soma and the modern-day addiction to the internet and social media.

The internet and social media have revolutionized the way we interact with the world around us. They have made communication easier and faster, allowed for instant access to information, and provided a platform for self-expression. However, with these benefits come potential downsides, including addiction and overreliance on these platforms.

Take a holiday from reality whenever you like, and come back without so much as a headache or a mythology.”

A brave new World – Aldous Huxley

One of the main themes in “Brave New World” is the idea that happiness can be manufactured and controlled. The citizens of the society are conditioned to believe that their purpose in life is to be happy, and the use of soma ensures that they remain content and docile. Similarly, social media and the internet can provide an illusion of happiness and fulfillment. People may spend hours scrolling through their feeds, seeking validation and entertainment.

The effects of social media addiction can be damaging and long-lasting. Additionally, the constant need for validation and approval can lead to a cycle of seeking out likes and followers, ultimately becoming a never-ending pursuit of social acceptance.

Just as the citizens of the society in “Brave New World” are controlled through the use of soma, we too may be controlled by our reliance on social media and the internet. The constant need for stimulation and entertainment can lead to a loss of focus and productivity, and the inability to disconnect can interfere with personal relationships and mental health.

In conclusion, while the drug soma in “Brave New World” may be a fictional concept, it is not difficult to draw parallels between its effects and our modern-day addiction to social media and the internet. As with any addiction, it is important to recognize the potential consequences and take steps to mitigate its effects. By setting boundaries and limiting our use of these platforms, we can regain control of our lives and avoid falling into the trap of manufactured happiness.
